About "Tritons" and not only . Part 1.
Raster maps in Magellan GPS navigators.Precartography GPS epoch.
Wednesday 21 September 2011 at 6:30 pm.
My first portable GPS navigator was heavy, strong and very reliable Magellan GPS 4000XL.
300 gramms of the brick in military style with an amorphous substance instead of glass, on which furrows with millimetric depth grew in 24hours, seemed then a fantasy.
Nobody of my touristic friends had such a miracle, and many of them hardly heard about it.Two-channel receiver released in 1998 terribly lost satellites in wet forest and shallow canyons, but the most part of time it showed exact coordinates and specified directions and distances to any of 200 points stored in its memory.
And it was quite enough to use it. Since then I never wandered in a fog and didn't suffer in doubts at every crossroad of the trip.
Contrary to general opinion, presence of the portable GPS navigator doesn't exclude possibility to lose the way, but it saves forces and nerves. It doesn't solve problems and doesn't keep from errors, but it helps to make them less and to spend less time for liquidation of consequences.

Without map, compass or brains, even in the well-known habitable place it is possible to stray all the day. Having map, compass and ability them to use, it is also possible to choose the wrong way and to lose some hours. Having the navigator even without cartography, you begin to realise in 15 minutes that something goes wrong, and it takes the same time to return to the planned route. Presence of good map directly in the navigator, as a matter of fact, doesn't change anything. Simply everyrhing becomes even faster than with the paper one.
After a while I replaced the rare navigator with «GPS of all times and all the people», legendary Magellan 315. It still didn't provide loading maps too, but it could be connected to computer to load the points planned before a trip and to keep a track of the passed way. It was much smaller and easier and lost satellites less often.
The track kept in computer considerably facilitated my work connected with drawing up reports of the trips. On the way I was simply taking photos of all reference points with digital camera, and then at home I determined taken coordinates with the help of program BindFoto specially written for this purpose and looked where it was on the map. It is a pity that the track in this navigator was limited by 1200 points that sufficed me during the first hundred kilometers.
Magellan map updates, following after 300th series (Magellan SporTrak and Magellan explorist) didn’t caused a desire to change the navigator again. In addition to that I already had, I received only bigger size of a track and possibility of loading vector maps in navigation, absolutely useless in mountains and an impassable jungle.
The situation changed only with the advent of possibility to load the raster map to navigator.
